Love me some law readings…

Where did that time go! Honestly cannot believe that we are already in the third week of uni. Once this month is over we are on another break and then it’s THE FINAL COUNTDOWN *DUN DUN DUNNNNNN*. So much is going on and it’s crazy! Everything is moving at such a fast pace, all my classes are really interesting but full on and require a lot more out of class time than I thought. I have been struggling to stay on top of it a bit but finally getting my ‘A into G’ so to speak and getting things done, catching up on readings that I didn’t quite get up to. It’s been good though because although it has been really hard to work through it, especially those law readings they are painful, it has been rewarding to actually get it done.

In the halls we are in the best week of the year, not only do we have our ball coming up this Friday but we are currently in what we call Secret Admirers Week. What that is, is pretty much you fill out a form just telling a little bit about yourself, favourite food, celebrity crush and all that jazz and hand it in to your Resident Advisor (RA) and they meticulously divvy out the forms to someone and they then become your secret admirer for the week. Pretty much just a great opportunity to do a few things, be very kind to that person and make them smile, buy them their favourite food that they cannot afford, or absolutely humiliate them. So far I have received a variety of notes on my door with compliments in different languages, a cheesecake and just because my secret admirer has a sense of humour they made me go on a scavenger hunt that took me around the hall, all to get one small jar of Peanut Butter. I hate Peanut Butter but it was a good laugh.

As we get closer and closer to the end of the year though so many things are playing on my mind. Next years living arrangement has been the biggest thing. Recently the applications for becoming a Resident Adviser (RA) came out, for those who don’t know the quick explanation of an RA is an older student (2nd year and up) who pretty much lives/works at the halls of resident as a like manager of a floor. They just look after the residents on their floor, making sure that their happy and for First Years especially that they are coping with the stresses of Uni and moving away from home for the first time etc. If the residents are struggling, they will try find ways to work with them in order to get them back on track and return them to the place where enjoyed the uni life because it is really enjoyable. This is something that a lot of people asked if I was going to do and I kind of thought that I might be silly in at least not applying but I feel that I need to continue this like journey of maturing a bit further so I decided that I would rather flat next year and maybe reevaluate next year.

Flatting though seems daunting. After a bit of trial and hard thinking I think I’ve sussed my flatting group for next year which is really exciting, I am fortunate to have some of my closest friends in this group and wanting to really be involved in this process which is a huge relief because I was worried that this whole like flat responsibility of finding places and organising things was going to be entirely up to me. Auckland being the difficult city it is, is very different from everywhere else it seems. My friends in Dunedin and Christchurch not only have sorted out their groups, they have their flats already lined up. Which to me is completely unfathomable. With Auckland’s housing demand being so high it seems that flats become available a lot closer to the time that they need tenants rather than well in advance because landlords are guaranteed to have many people lining up for their properties. My biggest fear is that when I leave in November is that my group will miss out on all the flats that will become available in December and we might struggle to find a flat but I am hoping and praying that it will all just work out.

There is so much to talk about but I’ll save some of it for next time but you can see what I’ve been getting up to in the photos below. Hope everyone has a great week and I will be back again soon.

Hakuna Matata.
